Sony FX30 Body + XLR Handle Unit (ILMEFX30)
Cinematic expression - 26MP APS-C/Super35 Exmor R BSI CMOS sensor
Similar to other cameras in Sony's cinema line, the FX30's advanced imaging system captures detailed 10-bit UHD 4K images at up to 120 fps, giving it the hallmarks of a true movie camera. The newly developed 26MP APS-C Exmor R CMOS sensor and BIONZ XR processor are capable of capturing high-quality 4K images in the Super35 area (16:9). Capable of capturing 14+ stops of dynamic range, this system takes advantage of the Dual Base ISO architecture to improve low-light performance.
- High sensitivity shooting up to ISO 32000 and Dual Base ISO (800/2500).
- When using S-Log3, the FX30 can capture 14+ stops of dynamic range.
- Record in 10-bit 4:2:2 using advanced XAVC HS and XAVC SI formats.
- Full pixel readout from the 6K sensor ensures high-quality UHD 4K video at up to 60 fps.
- High-speed shooting is possible in 4K at up to 120 fps with a 1.6x crop and in Full HD at up to 240 fps.
- The HDMI output supports 16-bit raw video to selected recorders sold separately.
Professional image control
Filmmakers can capture ready-to-publish images for fast-turnaround projects or opt for maximum quality and flexibility in post with a wide range of image options:
- S-Cinetone uses the same color science as Sony's advanced film cameras, including the VENICE line, with natural midtones, soft colors and smooth highlight roll-off.
- Picture Profiles, such as S-Log3 and HLG, capture images with greater dynamic range and greater flexibility for editors.
- Creative Looks can be built into the recorded images to create a specific atmosphere during shooting and minimize the need for editing.
- Up to 16 custom LUTs and three presets can be set for precise monitoring of images or previewing a specific look during shooting. These can be applied to the camera's monitor or EVF and to the HDMI output.
Suitable for all levels
Professional features ensure that novices and professionals alike can get the most out of the FX30. This includes three logging modes:
- Flexible ISO uses standard ISO settings for easy operation and the greatest flexibility.
- Cine EI captures maximum dynamic range by shooting at a manually selected base ISO setting and applying adjustments to metadata for monitoring and post-production.
- Cine EI quick automatically switches between the two basic ISO settings for easier operation and great quality.
Intuitive controls and controls - Fast Hybrid AF
Enjoy fast and highly accurate autofocus performance in every mode, including 4K at up to 120 fps, using an advanced Fast Hybrid AF system that utilizes 495 points spanning 90% of the image sensor.
- Real-time Eye AF and Real-time Tracking track human and animal eyes.
- The AF assist function automatically switches to manual focus by turning the lens focus ring.
- Focus Map makes it easier to visualize the focus area in your shot.
5-axis in-body image stabilization
Sony has equipped the FX30 with a 5-axis in-body image stabilization system that ensures smooth images even when working handheld. An Active Mode is available that combines optical systems with digital optimizations to capture ultra-smooth images. The FX30 can also record gyroscopic movements when the optical stabilizers are off, which can be used afterwards to get a stable shot.
Extensive features
Many of Sony's cinema features have found their way into the FX30:
- Lens Breathing Compensation works with selected lenses in 4K up to 60p in-camera, or up to 120p using Catalyst software after shooting.
- Timecode sync input with optional VMC-BNCM1 Timecode adapter cable
- Tally lights for a clear indication that the camera is recording.
Catalyst Browse and Prepare integration
The FX30 records an extensive set of metadata that can be read and used by Sony's Catalyst Browse and Prepare software.
Included metadata includes:
- Embedded LUT and Exposure Index (EI) data.
- Gyro and lens stabilization metadata to further reduce camera shake.
- Lens Breathing compensation can be controlled and adjusted manually.
- Metadata about camera rotation ensures that the footage is displayed as intended.
- Shot markers can be added to clips during or after recording for reference.
Ergonomic shape for solo use
Lightweight and compact, the FX30 (in a design similar to the FX3) allows users to film without the need for a cage.
The body has multiple threaded attachment points ideal for accessories and a Multi Interface Shoe that supports advanced accessories. In addition, an integrated fan ensures reliable performance during long recordings.
Lightweight body weighs only 562 g.
Dedicated zoom button.
Fully customizable button layout.
Five 1/4"-20 threaded mounting points for accessories.
Multi Interface Shoe supports advanced accessories.
Active cooling fan for uninterrupted shooting during long recordings.
The FX30 has the same design as the FX3 and can use many of the same accessories, such as cages, without the need for modifications.
A plethora of connectivity options
The FX30 is equipped with a wide range of connections for maximum customization and flexibility on set:
Full-size HDMI output features clean output up to 4K 60p and 16-bit raw video.
A 3.5mm headphone output and a 3.5mm microphone input.
The USB-C connection can be used for fast data transfer or for powering the camera.
Multi-Terminal (Micro-USB) supports various accessories, such as remote controls, for extended functionality.
Timecode sync is available through the use of the separately sold VMC-BNCM1 Timecode Adapter Cable.
The Multi Interface Shoe supports advanced accessories, including the XLR Handle Unit.
Media options
The FX30 features dual CFexpress Type A/SD card slots, allowing users to choose between different media types for different situations. CFexpress Type A has ultra-fast speeds that can be used for the most advanced recording functions of the FX30, while SD cards are often more common and still offer great speed and capacity.
Renewed menu system
The FX30 benefits from a modified control menu that makes operation more intuitive:
The main menu provides a quick view of all your most important video settings, including Picture Profile, recording format, white balance, aperture, ISO and more.
The recording screen moves the information about settings and status icons to the edges of the screen to keep the image uncluttered.
