Sony FX30 Body Only (ILME-FX30B)
Cinematic Expression - 26MP APS-C/Super35 Exmor R BSI CMOS Sensor
The FX30’s advanced imaging system is similar to other cameras in Sony’s cinema line, capturing detailed 10-bit UHD 4K footage at up to 120 fps, giving it the characteristics of a true cinema camera. The newly developed 26MP APS-C Exmor R CMOS sensor and BIONZ XR processor are capable of capturing high-quality 4K footage in the Super35 (16:9) aspect ratio. This system is capable of capturing 14+ stops of dynamic range and takes advantage of the Dual Base ISO architecture to improve low-light performance.
- High-sensitivity recording up to ISO 32000 and Dual Base ISO (800/2500).
- When using S-Log3, the FX30 can capture 14+ stops of dynamic range.
- Record in 10-bit 4:2:2 using advanced XAVC HS and XAVC SI formats.
- Full pixel readout from the 6K sensor enables high-quality UHD 4K video at up to 60 fps.
- High-speed recording is possible in 4K up to 120 fps with a 1.6x crop and in Full HD up to 240 fps.
- The HDMI output supports 16-bit raw video to selected, separately available recorders.
Professional image control
Filmmakers can capture footage that is immediately ready for release for fast-turnaround projects or maximize quality and flexibility in post with a wide range of image options:
- S-Cinetone uses the same color science as Sony's advanced cinema cameras, including the VENICE line, with natural mid-tones, soft colors and smooth highlight roll-off.
- Picture Profiles, such as S-Log3 and HLG, capture images with greater dynamic range and greater flexibility for editors.
- Creative Looks can be incorporated into recorded footage to create a specific atmosphere during shooting and minimize the need for editing.
- Up to 16 custom LUTs and three presets can be set for accurately monitoring images or previewing a specific look during shooting. These can be applied to the camera's monitor or EVF, and to the HDMI output.
Suitable for all levels
Professional features ensure that beginners and professionals alike can make the most of the FX30. These include three log recording modes:
- Flexible ISO uses standard ISO settings for ease of operation and greatest flexibility.
- Cine EI captures maximum dynamic range by recording at a manually selected base ISO setting and applying adjustments to metadata for monitoring and post-production.
- Cine EI quick automatically switches between the two base ISO settings for easier operation and great quality.
Intuitive Operation and Controls - Fast Hybrid AF
Enjoy fast, highly accurate autofocus performance in any mode, including 4K at up to 120 fps, using an advanced Fast Hybrid AF system that employs 495 points spread across 90% of the image sensor.
- Real-time Eye AF and Real-time Tracking follow the eyes of people and animals.
- The AF Assist function automatically switches to manual focus by turning the lens focus ring.
- Focus Map makes it easier to visualize the focus area in your shot.
5-axis on-body image stabilization
Sony has equipped the FX30 with a 5-axis in-body image stabilization system that ensures smooth footage, even when shooting handheld. There is an Active Mode available, which combines optical systems with digital optimizers to capture ultra-smooth footage. The FX30 can also record gyroscopic movements when the optical stabilizers are turned off, which can be used after the fact to steady the shot.
Extended features
Many of Sony's cinema features have made their way into the FX30:
- Lens Breathing Compensation works with selected lenses in 4K up to 60p in-camera, or up to 120p using Catalyst software post-capture.
- Timecode sync input with optional VMC-BNCM1 Timecode adapter cable
- Tally lights for a clear indication that the camera is recording.
Catalyst Browse and Prepare integration
The FX30 records an extensive array of metadata that can be read and used by Sony's Catalyst Browse and Prepare software.
Recorded metadata includes:
- Embedded LUT and Exposure Index (EI) data.
- Gyro and lens stabilization metadata to further reduce camera shake.
- Lens Breathing compensation can be controlled and adjusted manually.
- Camera rotation metadata ensures that footage is displayed as intended.
- Recording markers can be added to clips during or after recording for reference.
Ergonomic shape for solo use
Lightweight and compact, the FX30 (in a design similar to the FX3) offers users the ability to film without the need for a cage.
The body features multiple threaded mounting points ideal for accessories and a Multi Interface Shoe that supports advanced accessories. In addition, an integrated cooling fan ensures reliable performance during long shoots.
Lightweight body weighs only 562g.
Special zoom button.
Fully customizable button layout.
Five 1/4"-20 threaded mounting points for accessories.
Multi Interface Shoe supports advanced accessories.
Active cooling fan for uninterrupted shooting during long shoots.
The FX30 shares the same design as the FX3 and can use many of the same accessories, such as cages, without any modifications required.
An abundance of connectivity options
The FX30 is equipped with a wide range of connections for maximum customization and flexibility on set:
Full-size HDMI output features clean output up to 4K 60p and 16-bit raw video.
A 3.5mm headphone output and a 3.5mm microphone input.
The USB-C connection can be used for fast data transfer or to power the camera.
Multi-Terminal (Micro-USB) supports various accessories, such as remote controls, for extended functionality.
Timecode sync is available through the use of the separately available VMC-BNCM1 Timecode Adapter Cable.
The Multi Interface Shoe supports advanced accessories, including the optional XLR Handle Unit.
Media options
The FX30 features dual CFexpress Type A/SD card slots, allowing users to choose between different media types for different situations. CFexpress Type A has ultra-fast speeds that can be used for the FX30's most advanced recording features, while SD cards are often more common and still offer great speed and high capacity.
Renewed menu system
The FX30 benefits from a redesigned operating menu that makes operation more intuitive:
The main menu provides a quick view of all your key video settings, including Picture Profile, recording format, white balance, aperture, ISO and more.
The recording screen moves information about settings and status icons to the edges of the screen to keep the image uncluttered.
