Designed for live production
Although Blackmagic Studio Camera is designed for live production, it is not limited to use with a live switcher as it records Blackmagic RAW to USB drives so it can be used in any tripod working situation. The large 7" viewfinder makes it perfect for work such as chat shows, television productions, broadcast news, sports, education, conference presentations and even weddings. The large bright display with side handles, touchscreen and physical controls makes it easy to monitor shots while being comfortable is to use for a long time. Because it is so light, it is perfect when you are constantly changing locations and doing different types of work.
Studio Camera Design
The striking Blackmagic Studio Camera has all the advantages of a large studio camera because it combines camera and viewfinder in one compact design. The camera has a lightweight carbon fiber reinforced polycarbonate housing with innovative technology in a very compact design. The camera is designed for live production, so it's easy to track and frame shots with the large 7" viewfinder. The touchscreen has menus for camera settings and physical buttons for brightness, contrast and focus peaking. In addition, a tripod mount with mounting plate included for quick installation.
Advanced low-light performance
The Blackmagic Studio Camera has a gain of -12 dB (100 ISO) to +36 dB (25,600 ISO) and is therefore optimized to reduce noise in the image, while maintaining the full dynamic range of the sensor. The primary native ISO is 400, which is ideal for use under studio lighting. The secondary high base ISO of 3200 is perfect for shooting in dimly lit environments. The gain can be set from the camera or remotely from a switcher using the SDI or Ethernet camera remote.
Cinematic images in live production
The sensor combined with Blackmagic generation 5 color science gives you the same imaging technology used in digital film cameras. This means that you can now use film footage for live production. Moreover, in combination with DaVinci Resolve's built-in primary color corrector, you get much better images than with simple broadcast cameras. The color corrector can even be controlled from the switcher. With 13 stops of dynamic range, the camera has darker blacks and brighter whites, perfect for color correction. Ideal for both HD and Ultra HD production, the 4K models feature 3840 x 2160 resolution from 23.98 to 60 fps.
Affordable photographic lenses
With the popular EF or MFT lens mount, Blackmagic studio cameras are compatible with a wide range of affordable photographic lenses and the active lens mount allows you to adjust the lens remotely. To avoid having to reach around the camera to manually adjust the lens, the optional focus and zoom remotes let you adjust the lens from the tripod handles, just like a large studio camera. This means you avoid camera shake when adjusting the lens, so you can monitor shots and operate the camera without taking your hands off the tripod. It gives you the same feeling as working with an expensive B4 broadcast lens.
Framing shots with the large 7" viewfinder
The large, high-resolution 7" screen will completely change the way you work with the camera, as it is large enough to make framing shots much easier. On-screen overlays show status and shooting parameters, histogram, focusing aids , levels, frame guides and much more. You can even apply 3D LUTs to control shots with the color and look you want. The touchscreen also has menus and you can load and adjust presets for different tasks. The included lens hood can be folded to reveal protect the screen during transport and is compatible with lens hoods of the Blackmagic Studio Viewfinder.
Physical controls and touchscreen
Blackmagic Studio cameras have physical buttons and buttons and touchscreen controls. The buttons on the right side of the camera allow you to adjust brightness, contrast and focus peaking. The focus peaking button is incredibly useful as it allows you to fine-tune the detail highlight so you can focus perfectly while zooming. The three function buttons on the left allow you to assign functions such as zebra, false color, focus peaking, LUTs and more. Additionally, you can change the function assigned to each button in the menus. The touchscreen also includes a heads-up display with key shooting information and menus for all camera settings, LUTs and custom presets.
Built-in Tally for On Air Status
Blackmagic Studio Cameras have a very large tally that lights up red for on air, green for preview and orange for ISO recording. The tally light also includes clip on transparent camera numbers, making it easy for talent to see camera numbers from up to 20 meters away. The Blackmagic Studio Cameras support the SDI tally standard used on all ATEM live production switchers and the HDMI tally used on ATEM Mini switchers. This means that a director can switch between cameras and the tally information is sent back to the cameras via the SDI program return feed, causing the tally light on the camera to illuminate when it is on air. SDI tally eliminates the need for complicated wiring so commands can be set up faster.
Communicate with the director via Talkback
Unlike consumer cameras, Blackmagic studio cameras have SDI connections with talkback, allowing the switcher operator to communicate with the cameras during live events. This means that the director can talk to the camera operators to take control and prevent all cameras from having the same shot at the same time. All models support 3.5mm headsets designed for smartphones. Talkback uses audio channels 15 and 16 in the SDI connection between the camera and the switcher, and in the program return from the switcher to the camera. This means that any embedded SDI audio device can work with talkback.
Affordable camera control via SDI
All Blackmagic Design ATEM switchers can control cameras via a protocol built into the camera's SDI video connections. The switcher can do color correction, tally and lens control and these are sent to all cameras. You just have to select the correct camera number and it all works. Even ATEM Mini switchers can control Blackmagic Studio Cameras because the HDMI output to the switcher has return data communication that can send control information back to the camera.
Blackmagic RAW quality
Blackmagic RAW is a revolutionary new format designed to capture and preserve the quality of your camera's sensor data. Some file formats such as H.264 are highly compressed, adding noise and artifacts and losing sensor details forever. Blackmagic RAW eliminates this problem, so you get stunning images with incredible detail and rich colors throughout the post-production pipeline. Blackmagic RAW also saves camera settings as metadata, so you can change ISO, white balance and exposure later in DaVinci Resolve. Plus, the files are small and fast, so the editing speed is incredible. Only with Blackmagic RAW you get the highest quality, the smallest files and the fastest performance.
USB expansion port for accessories
The Blackmagic Studio Camera features a high-speed USB-C expansion port that lets you record to external drives, control the camera over a network, or connect to a variety of accessories. Connect an external USB flash drive and the camera can record high-quality 12-bit Blackmagic RAW files for later editing and color correction. That means you can just move the drive to a computer to work and not have to waste time copying files. Or add a USB-C to Ethernet adapter to control your camera over a network via easy-to-use REST APIs. You can even copy files from the camera over the network. Plus connect optional focus and zoom remotes to enable full lens control, just like a large studio camera.
Built-in microphones
Blackmagic Studio cameras have built-in microphones so you get sound included in the design making setup much faster. Plus, the built-in microphones are shock and wind resistant, so you get great sound even in harsh conditions. With each microphone positioned at the edges of the screen, you get the benefit of the studio camera design for better stereo separation than is possible with a regular video camera. There's also a 3.5mm audio input for connecting video camera microphones and a 3.5mm headphone jack.
Monitor program returns
With the Blackmagic Studio Camera you can view the program return of the switcher with one push of a button. Simply press the camera's PGM button and the viewfinder switches from the camera display to the switcher's program feed. Moreover, you can listen to the sound of the switcher with the built-in speaker. Program return is a great feature because camera operators at large live shows sometimes have to wait a long time for their camera to be switched, so program return allows them to watch the show while they wait. This means that even if the camera operator is far away from the switcher, he can still stay aware of what is happening and remain alert.
Powered by Blackmagic OS
With the advanced Blackmagic OS you get an intuitive and user-friendly camera control system based on the latest technology. Blackmagic OS is a truly modern operating system with all camera functions working independently for smoother operation, plus the camera boots almost instantly. It features the same controls and menus as other Blackmagic Design cameras, so you can easily switch between cameras on set. The interface uses simple tap and swipe gestures to adjust settings, add metadata, and view recording status. You also have full control over advanced camera features such as on-screen focus and exposure tools, 3D LUTs, HDR, metadata entry, timecode, Blackmagic RAW settings and more.
Supports 3D LUTs for film look
When shooting RAW files in Blackmagic to preserve the camera's dynamic range, 3D LUTs can be used to keep the viewfinder display images from looking washed out and washed out. 3D LUTs solve this problem because they convert the image just before it is displayed on the LCD screen. This allows the recorded film gamma images to be converted into images that look nicer on the LCD screen. 3D LUTs are also saved to the Blackmagic RAW files so they can be used in later post-production, but they are never permanently burned into the Blackmagic RAW image data, so you always have the option to disable them. This means that the 3D LUT is transported in the Blackmagic RAW file, but is only used when you enable it.
Menu in 13 popular languages
The Blackmagic Studio Cameras are designed for worldwide use and therefore support 13 popular languages. When setting up your camera, you can choose to work in English, German, French, Spanish, Polish, Portuguese, Italian, Russian, Turkish, Ukrainian, Chinese, Japanese or Korean. You can easily switch to another language by going to the menu settings. When switching between languages, all on-screen overlays, heads-up display and setup menus are displayed in the selected language and you can switch languages at any time.
Power supply via DC or 10G Ethernet
Blackmagic Studio Cameras have a 12 VDC lockable power connection so the cable is not accidentally pulled out. Moreover, the power supply comes with five different socket adapters for different countries. However, if you use a single Ethernet cable to connect to the Blackmagic Studio Camera Pro models, then the entire camera and accessories can be powered via the Ethernet connection.
