Sony FX6 Camera Body
Sony's FX6 Full-Frame Camera has been developed to capture versatile cine-style images in a truly compact size. With the ability to capture up to 15+ stops of dynamic range, Sony's S-Cinetone range for cinematic skin tones, and up to 10-bit, 4:2:2 XAVC-I recording, the FX6 is suitable for use alongside either your FX9 or VENICE but also as a single camera for documentaries and also to make gimbal and drone recordings. The FX6 camera combines a 4K full-frame Exmor R sensor with a BIONX XR engine for extremely light-sensitive shots with a base ISO of 800 and an ISO 12800 high-sensitivity mode for nuanced low-light scenes.
Weighing in at 890g, the FX6 body is a whopping 890g lighter than the FX9, and at 15.3x11.6cm it packs a full-frame sensor into a body similar to the Sony FS5. While the FX6 fits seamlessly into an on-set workflow, it also offers a number of features that are a boon if you're working alone. These include fast and accurate phase-detection AF with both face detection and real-time eye AF, both automatic and manual ND filter settings for fast exposure compensation, and a 3.5" LCD monitor with time-saving touchscreen access to key menu settings.
Versatile addition to Sony Cinema Line
As part of Sony's Cinema Line, the FX6 shares key image features with established cameras such as the VENICE and FX9. Common features include a full-frame sensor, cinematic color, a compact, lightweight design, professional connector interfaces, and advanced autofocus options.
Compared to the FX9, the FX6 differs on a number of points; but many FX6 specs match those of the FX9 and several are an improvement:
It rivals the FX9's video capture up to DCI 4K60
Has the same S-Cinetone, S-Log3 and HLG gamma choices.
Outputs 16-bit raw like the FX9.
Sony E lens mount
Offers the same 1/4 to 1/128 ND options
Also has 2 channel XLR audio inputs
Differences between the FX6 and the FX9:
4K recording vs. 6K
Has a single 12G/6G/3G-SDI BNC port, eliminating the additional 3G-SDI port of the FX9.
Has a timecode port, but lacks the FX9's genlock connection.
Enhanced FX6 specs include
An ISO range of 320 to 409,600 versus 320 to 102,400 on the FX9.
Highest frame rates of 120p in 4K and up to 240p in HD versus the top 1080p in HD of the FX9.
Dual card slots compatible with the high-efficiency CFexpress Type A or commonly available SDXC cards. The FX9 van only uses XQD cards and a single SD card option.
4K Full Frame CMOS Exmor R Sensor
The FX6's 10.2MP image sensor features back-side illumination for excellent low-light performance, 627-point fast phase-detection AF, and compatibility with full-frame lenses for a rich, cinematic look. The sensor's fast scanning speed minimizes rolling shutter artifacts and supports fast frame rates and fast autofocus responses.
15+ Stops of Dynamic Range
Thanks to the Exmor R sensor, the FX6 can also capture a whopping 15+ stops of dynamic range in Cine EI mode with S-Log3 for nuanced, high-resolution images.
Electronically variable ND filters
Set the FX6's integrated ND filter system to auto for correctly exposed shots even in changing lighting conditions, or manually adjust the ND filter density in 1/4 to 1/128 increments as you shoot; either option produces correctly exposed images without affecting your chosen depth of field.
Advanced XAVC codec options
The FX6 is the first compact full-frame camera to offer UHD 4K 4:2:2 recording in the high-quality yet efficient XAVC-I codec. In addition, you can choose from a range of professional XAVC Intra and XAVC Long codecs with bit rates from 35 to 600 Mb/s.
Selections for high frame rates
For slow-motion and fast-action looks, choose from full-frame rates of:
1-60 fps in HD up to DCI 4K resolutions
100 or 120 fps in HD up to UHD 4K
150, 180, 200 or 240 fps in Full HD.
Super35 choices include:
1-60, 100 and 120 fps in Full HD
Expressive cinematic look
Sony's S-Cinetone gamma curve offers a cinematic look with film-like colors, softer tones and a pleasing skin tones reproduction. This cinematic look is not only available for in-camera viewing, but can also be captured in the shot to shorten the time-consuming post-process. The choices for S-Cinetone, S-Log3, S-Gamut3 and S-Gamut3.Cine also streamline the process of matching FX6 footage to your VENICE or FX9 video and provide wide color grading options.
Fast hybrid/phase-detection autofocus
Compatible with over 50 native Sony E-mount lenses, the FX6's enhanced autofocus includes Face Detection and Eye AF for fast, highly accurate focusing, even in low-light conditions.
Image stabilization and more with Catalyst and Metadata
Pair the FX6 with Sony's Catalyst Prepare/Browse software to use metadata to stabilize your image, automatically rotate gimbal images and add markers for easier clip filtering in post-production.
Touch screen 3.5" LCD control
The FX6's 3.5" high-resolution LCD screen offers the convenience of touchscreen camera operation. The LCD quick menu contains key settings such as Codec, imager scan mode, frame size and frequency, base ISO/sensitivity, shooting mode and sound levels .
Reliable design and construction
Constructed from a lightweight yet durable magnesium alloy, the FX6's body provides maximum reliability and efficiently dissipates heat to allow for extended shooting times. The seams, buttons and interfaces on the outside are provided with a new seal that makes the camera more resistant to dust and moisture.
4 channel audio recording
The FX6 offers up to 4-channel audio recording by combining sources from the dual XLR inputs, the 2-channel multi-interface shoe input and the built-in stereo microphone in the camera's top grip. This allows the simultaneous use of an external microphone for recording your main audio source and the built-in microphone for ambient noise and/or operator voice memos.
Professional input/output interface
The FX6's input and output ports include a selectable 12G/6G/3G-SDI output for flexible monitoring, 12-bit raw output via SDI, and an HDMI output. It also has a timecode input and output for synchronizing multiple cameras and a built-in Wi-Fi module.
CFexpress media slots and multiple recording modes
The FX6's dual media slots accept both high-capacity CFexpress Type A cards and commonly available UHS-II/UHS-1 SDXC cards.
*CFexpress Type A cards are required for 100/120 fps UHD 4K recording and 150/180/200/240 fps high speed HD recording.
Modular, grab-and-go design
The modular design of the FX6 allows the camera to be deployed for use with a gimbal or drone, or it can be used with separately available accessories such as a smart grip and smart handle for handheld shooting. A 3.5" LCD screen can be quickly positioned in multiple locations on the camera for comfortable, ergonomic viewing.
Mobile compatibility with Content Browser
When used with the separately available Content Browser Mobile app and a compatible smartphone or remote control, the FX6's Wi-Fi function allows remote monitoring and focus/iris/zoom control.
